CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Thomas G. Shaughnessy, 1925-2010
Berwyn's mayor from 1993 to 2005
December 24, 2010(By Angie Leventis Lourgos, Tribune reporter)
Thomas G. Shaughnessy, 85, Berwyn's mayor from 1993 to 2005 and previously city clerk, died of kidney failure Tuesday, Dec. 21, at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, his family said.

"He spent his entire life in Berwyn," said his son, Tom Shaughnessy Jr. "He was devoted to Berwyn."

As mayor, Mr. Shaughnessy centralized the city's libraries into what is now the Thomas G. Shaughnessy Center, designed to make more books and other library materials accessible to more residents. He started a handyman program so senior citizens could get home repairs for free, city workers said.

Mr. Shaughnessy also organized Fourth of July festivities and other events for families. He was known to attend every fundraiser, church and civic event in Berwyn. He enjoyed letting children who were visiting City Hall play mayor, banging the gavel or giving mock speeches into a microphone at the dais.

"He was the most calming person I have ever met in my whole life," said friend and former secretary Mary Drenth, who worked for him for about 20 years.

When she interviewed for the job, Drenth explained that she was a single mother caring for a son with cancer, and she worried about missing work if he was hospitalized. Mr. Shaughnessy told her, "We'll work it out," she said.

"He would have done that for anyone," Drenth said. "If somebody had a problem, it became his problem."

His administration was not without controversy, notably the conviction of his top assistant, Samuel Stillo, on bribery charges in 2006 as a result of a federal investigation of City Hall.

Before his life in politics, Mr. Shaughnessy served in the Navy during World War II. A signalman aboard the USS Yorktown, he earned awards including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Victory Ribbon, his son said.

Mr. Shaughnessy met his wife, Beverly Ann, at Morton West High School, where he was a football player and she was a cheerleader. They had two children and were married for 63 years.

Friends and relatives said Mr. Shaughnessy was an avid singer and shared his tenor voice with relatives and neighbors at family and civic events. He was also a member of the choir at St. Leonard Church in Berwyn.

He was one of the founding fathers of the Claddagh Ring, an Irish fellowship group that draws members from Berwyn and neighboring suburbs.

Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said Mr. Shaughnessy was proud when he sang the national anthem during a White Sox game in the mid-1990s.

"He was extremely excited, being able to sing for a crowd like that," O'Halloran said.

Mr. Shaughnessy is also survived by his wife; a daughter, Patricia Lynn Kennedy; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Joseph Nosek & Sons Funeral Home, 6716 W. 16th St., Berwyn. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leonard Church, 3318 Clarence Ave., Berwyn.
