Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Caivano, Francesco Morano entered seminary in Aversa, later pursuing his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran Athenaeum, the Royal University and the Studium of the Sacred Congregation of the Council, earning doctorates in philosophy, theology, canon and civil laws, and a lawyer diploma from the Sacred Roman Rota. Ordained priest in August 1897, Morano joined the Vatican Observatory in 1900, publishing across the years several scientific works and becoming in 1934, president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Longtime member of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature and of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office he was appointed auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota in 1925. Consultant to various pontifical commissions, Pope John XXIII created him cardinal deacon with the deaconry of Ss. Cosma e Damiano in the consistory of December 1959. Appointed archbishop of the titular see of Fallaba, he received his episcopal consecration form the Pope himself on April 19, 1962 shortly before his ninetieth birthday. A severe bronchial pneumonia led to his demise at the palace of the Holy Office in 1968. Transferred to Aversa, his body was laid to rest in the chapel of the "Piccola Casa di Carità", founded by his elder brother, Canon Giuseppe, which has been since re-named "Casa Famiglia".
