Hastening home he served in an artillery company which was organized for the defence [sic] of New York Harbor. After peace was declared he turned his attention to commerce and took an active interest in the political questions of the day and at one time was editor of The Statesman. He was secretary to the commission which was charged with the adjustment of our difficulties with Spain and furnished leading articles for the Tri-States Union, a weekly paper of Port Jervis, N.Y., and was a member of the Democratic State Convention which met at Syracuse in 1853.

Trinity Church records in New York City show a marriage of John T. Mumford to Hannah L. Underhill, Jan. 9, 1814, by Rev. John H. Hobart. She has not been identified.
