Richard Phil Shumway
1921 ~ 2008

Richard Phil Shumway passed away at his home Tuesday, October 7th.

His parents, Charles and Julia Myrtle Jennings Shumway were early Arizona pioneers, and he was always proud of his Arizona heritage. He lead a pioneer life himself and was orphaned in his childhood.

He was the sixth of eight children; Wilford (Mable), Stanley (Francis), Nelle (Ralph Davis), Argyle (Marge), Lafe (Loa Jean), Lenn (Carmen) and Van (Ruth).

He married Nelda Moon and their 65 year marriage began May 27th, 1943, in the Mesa Temple.

Phil immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was a World War II Fighter pilot in the South Pacific.

After returning from the war he began his education graduating with his Masters from Minnesota and his PhD from Utah State. He loved teaching and was a Professor of Animal Science at BYU for 37 years. He loved education, serving on the Alpine School Board and the Utah State School Board for 21 years.
He also gave a lifetime of dedicated and loving service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Phil and Nelda served four missions together including Merida Mexico, Guatemala, Switzerland, and hosting in the Joseph Smith Building on Temple Square.

He is survived by his wife Nelda and his six children: Linda, Hallie (Lynn), Richard (Carolyn), Scott (Anne), Matthew (Rebecca), and James (Jill). His deceased son Curtis Begay.

He has 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the Sunset Heights Stake Center (1260 S 400 W) in Orem, Utah, Sat., October 11, 2008, at 2 p.m.

Viewings will be held at the Stake Center Fri. from 6-8 p.m. and two hours prior to the services Saturday.
