Van L. Shumway
December 18, 1925 - March 10, 2014

Van L Shumway passed away Monday March 10, 2014 surrounded by his 6 children. He was born in Taylor AZ, Dec. 18, 1925, the youngest of Charles L and Julia Myrtle Jennings Shumway's 8 children.

He married Ruth Fleming Aug. 21, 1952; together they made their home and raised their family in Phoenix. She passed away August 13, 2011.

Dad was fortunate to be raised in a small community of wonderful townspeople, half of whom were relatives. He was age 3 when he lost his mother to typhoid fever and was 10 when his father was killed in an auto accident--so was raised by older siblings. After graduating from Snowflake High he joined the army, serving in the Signal Corp of Patton's 3rd army in Europe during WWII.

He was an educator, earning a Master's Degree in Secondary Ed. from ASU. He cherished his associations with students, faculty and employees during his 20+ years as a school administrator for Dysart Schools.

He is also preceded in death by 4 brothers and 1 sister (Wilford, Stanley, Argyle, Phil and Nelle). Survived by brothers Lenn and Lafe; 5 sons and 1 daughter: Van (Vanessa), Kevin (Valarie), Daryl (Cecile), Tim (Stephanie), Dana (Jenny) and Cheryl (Mike Underwood).
