Irene Christina Johnson was born along with her twin sister, Inez to Ole and Lena (Gilbertson) Bjornstad on June 6, 1913 on the family farm in Freeland Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Florida Lutheran Church and attended District 100 School, which was located on land given by her father. She and Inez went on to attend the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, MN. Irene went to work at the County Poor Farm in 1936 where she assisted Ole and Gina Braaten until 1953. She then went to work at the Madison Lutheran Home. She also cared for Ole and Gina at their home in Madison during their last days. In 1968, Irene married Egil Johnson at Florida Lutheran Church, rural Canby. They went to Norway for seven weeks with the Sons of Norway group. Egil passed away in 1974. Irene moved in with Inez and Helen in their home in Canby to help care for Helen. In 2004, they all moved in to the nursing home in Canby. She resided there until the time of her death.

Irene celebrated her 100th birthday June 6th 2013 with family and friends. Irene was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. She enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, listening to old time music and playing bingo. She was a caregiver to many of her family members in need.

Irene is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Egil, nine brothers and five sisters. BLESSED BY HER MEMORY.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the Zahrbock Funeral Home Chapel, Madison, MN. Rev. Kirk Meseck will officiate at the service.

Interment will be at Hayden Cemetery in Madison.
