At the time of the 1880 US Census, 1-year-old Vernon resided with his parents, William and Mary, in Monticello, White County, Indiana. Three brothers and a sister were included in the household: Alonzo (12), Rosa (10), Francisco (7) and Asa Oscar (1 month). The family later moved to Solomon, Kansas, near the Irish community of New Cambria, where Nel Berigan was born and raised. Vernon was a "switchman" for the Rock Island Railroad. For many years he was "Yard Master" at the train station in Herington, Kansas, where his parents finally settled and where he and Nel established their home and family.
