Eleanor Douglass Hemphill, of Moorestown, formerly of Cinnaminson, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Brandywine at Moorestown Estates. She was 95.

She was born July 6, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to William Edwin and Eleanor (Law) Douglass.

On Oct. 18, 1941, she married William Gillespie Hemphill, who preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 2001.

She graduated from Wellsburg High School in Wellsburg, W.Va., and Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (now Carnegie Mellon University) as a piano major. It was during a rehearsal for a musical production at Tech that she was introduced to 'Hempy,' who became the love of her life. They were married just shy of 60 years.

She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Riverton, for more than five decades, where she was a devoted musician in the Chancel and Handbell Choirs, and served as an Elder, and on various committees.

She shared her love of music with countless children as piano teacher and participated in community choirs and music productions for many years. She was named outstanding volunteer for CONTACT Teleministry, was an avid reader, and enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, cooking, crocheting and chocolate. She was devoted to her husband, family and friends. Her life was a gift to all who were privileged to know her.

She is survived by her five children, Douglass Hemphill (Lanh) of Granger, Ind., Dianne Nickle (Michael) of Louisa, Va., Barbara Hopta (Stephen) of Charleston, W.Va., Mark Hemphill (Diane) of Cinnaminson, Scott Hemphill of Moorestown and his dear friend, Mary Cheesman; 11 grandchildren, Elana Bentley (Michael) of San Antonio, Texas, William Hemphill (Maggie) of London, England, Holly Kerwin (Michael) of Manassas, Va., Molly Crisp (Billy) of Mineral, Va., Nancy Nickle of Mineral, Va., Bethany Hopta of New York, N.Y., Emily Hopta (Jack Hoblitzell) of Charleston, W.Va., Kate Hopta (Brett Swanson) of Punxsutawney, Pa., Stephanie Donahue (Greg) of Woodbridge, Va., Jon Hemphill (Amy) of Delran, and Chris Hemphill of Cinnaminson; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by twin brothers, Thomas Edwin and William Franklin Douglass.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 300 Fourth St., Riverton, with The Rev. Alfred Graise officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.

Eleanor's family offers special thanks to Hospice volunteers and those who provided special care at Brandywine.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church.
