From the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Thursday, July 27, 1933, page 1:
  Relatives in Worden today received word of the death of Joseph Piper, 54, miner, of West Frankfort, who died suddenly last night at 7 p.m. at his home there. He formerly resided in Worden.
  Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at the Worden Christian Church, with burial in the Worden Cemetery.  Rev. Talmadge DeFries of Greenville will officiate.
  Mr. Piper was born on a farm near Worden Sept. 15, 1878, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Piper. Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. Anna [Molloy] Piper of Springfield are a son, David Piper, West Frankfort, one sister, Mrs. Theodore C. Unger, Worden, and a brother, James Piper of Spokane, Wash.

  Funeral services for Joseph R. Piper of West Frankfort, who died Wednesday evening, July 26, were held Friday afternoon, July 28, at 3 o'clock at the Worden Christian Church...Pallbearers were O.J. Sharp, Len Vaughn, Jas. Muir, Louis Eddings, Otis Alexander and Earl Abbott of West Frankfort. They were fellow officers of Mr. Piper in the local Union No. 1253...Mr. Piper was found by his parked automobile at reservoir at West Frankfort on Wednesday evening, July 26. Whether the revolver lying by his side was accidentally discharged by him or used by an assailant has not been established...
