John Riggs was born on April 29, 1779, son of Philip and Mary (Pierce) Riggs.* He had two brothers (David and Benjamin) and six sisters (Rh9da mMary, Hannah, Anna, Betsey, Susan). John married Nancy, daughter of Levi Benton. They moved to Angelica where they kept a public house several years, and afterwards returned to Benton, where he died in 1815, at the age of 36, and was buried in Yates County, New York.**
