Alma S. (Blyler) Umholtz, R.N., BSN, 88, of 2116 East Main St., Valley View, and a guest of School Yard Square in Pine Grove for one month, died July 16, 2011 at the Reading Hospital in Reading.

Born August 31, 1922 in Valley View, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Troutman) Blyler. She graduated from the former Hegins Township High School in 1940. Alma attended the Harrisburg School of Nursing and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked for several years as a LPN and when the Pennsylvania State University began offering a degree in nursing she quickly enrolled. At that time the program was held at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where she attended classes and in her spare time worked as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. In 1970 she returned to the Penn State Campus to complete the program of study. After graduation and passing her state boards she had attained her lifelong ambition of becoming a Registered Nurse.

She was employed by the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing in January of 1971 as a Medical-Surgical Nursing Instructor and worked in that capacity for 24 years retiring at age 72.

Alma was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Sacramento where she was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Choir, and also participated in many church activities. She was very active in girl scouts.

She is survived by a daughter Alice and her husband Larry R. Ebert of Pottstown; two grandsons and their families, Fred E. Ebert and his wife Kyra and their two sons, Jacob and Coleton of Perkiomenville, PA, and Peter M. Ebert and his wife Roxanne and their children, Elizabeth, Dakota, Jaden, and Rayne, of Harrisburg; and two sisters Anna Hoffman of Gratz, and Pearl Schadel of Millersburg.

Alma was the eleventh in a family of thirteen. She was preceded in death by three sisters Grace Troup, Maude Masser and Iva Carl, and by seven brothers Albert, Daniel, Roy, Elmer, Archie, Ralph, and Joseph Blyler.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday July, 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 2300 East Main St., Sacramento, PA 17968. Interment will be private in the Valley View Church of God Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's U.C.C. Church.
