Sioux Falls, SD ~ Harley L. Atwood, age 93, died on Saturday March 8, 2014 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM on Monday at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Harley L. Atwood was born on February 22, 1921 at Inwood, Iowa to Bert and Bertha (Holthe) Atwood. He was raised and attended school in Sioux Falls. Harley was united in marriage with Eleanor Schipper on November 9, 1940 in Sibley, IA. Harley worked on a farm until starting his career with John Morrell and Company on August 7, 1942. He took a short break from John Morrell and Company in 1944 to join the war effort. He honorably served in the US Navy onboard the USS Sea Flasher from 1944 to 1946. Harley then returned to John Morrell and worked until his retirement in 1982. In 1962 Harley purchased a miniature golf course on 33rd and Minnesota called Goofy Golf and operated it for 15 years. He was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed building and remodeling homes. Harley was a member of East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls; where he proudly served as an usher for over 53-years. Harley was also a member of the V.F.W., D.A.V., and American Legion Post 15.

Harley had a passion for hunting. He was a perfectionist who took great pride in his home, yard and his cars. He had a great sense of humor and loved teasing his family. Above all he loved and cherished his family. Harley was a loving son, brother, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend who will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his three daughters, Doris Phillips and her husband, Curt, Valley Springs, SD, Diana Johnson, Madison, SD, Linda Carmody and her husband, Mike, Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Patricia Engler, Terry (Kim) Phillips, Jay Phillips, Lori Lynn (David Lundsgaard) Phillips, Robert (Katera) Johnson, Ellen (Dean) Unzelman, Scott (Sherilyn) Carmody and Shari Cross; 13 great-grandchildren, Magdalena Phillips, Christian Lundsgaard, Svend Phillips, Annika Lundsgaard, Lorin Phillips, Jaclyn Phillips, Stacia Perry, Morgan Johnson, Kristina Unzelman, Sydney Johnson, Bryn Johnson, Erica Carmody and Brendan Carmody; three siblings, Mearl Atwood, Sioux Falls, John (Pat) Atwood, Des Moines, IA, and Evelyn Weidenbach, Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Harley is preceded in death by his parents, Bert & Bertha Atwood; wife, Eleanor Atwood; daughter, Marilyn Engler; three brothers, Ray, Bert and Palmer Atwood; and two sisters, Lavada Baker and Ida Tidwell.
