Known to family and friends as Carl, he was a native of Lake Arthur, LA. After graduating from Lake Arthur High School, he joined the Navy, serving on the USS Bache in 1962-63 and was a participant in the Cuban Missile crisis when the Bache, among one of many ships, surrounded a Soviet submarine, forcing it to surface. Carl was also active during the Bay of Pigs invasion. He retired from Exxon Refinery after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Pelican Relic and Recovery Association.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Melancon Abshire; one daughter, Carla and husband, Mike Giles; one son, Barry and his wife, Sue; two brothers, Sonny and Bobby Abshire; two sisters, Brenda Myers and Patricia Vincent; and one grandchild.
Preceeding Carl in death were his parents and one brother, Logan.
