My Dad

Gone today and forever in our hearts.

Daddy, you taught us so much in our lives, thank you.

Born and raised in Brookston Indiana, his one goal was to make it to the grown up table for the holidays except when he got old enough, there was not any more room at the adult table and he got stuck at the kids table a little bit longer.

Know to family at the time as "Herbie Gene" he let his first teacher know that his name was Herbie Gene. She called Herbert the first day of class and he stopped her and said "My name is Herbie Gene, not Herbert". By high school he was Herb, and not Herbie Gene to anyone but his Mom and Grandma.

By high school, he was in to drag racing and not at a race track. He and others young men his age loved to play chicken on the roads around White County. He also loved to race and so they would also drag race the roads too. In his senior year book, there is a couple of "looking forward" pages and for him, there was "in ten years, Herb Ford winning the Indy 500." He never raced Indy and his racing fever seemed to calm down over time, but he did love watching the Indy 500 most years.

Worked different jobs until he joined the Army and set off to see the world. He spent time in

Germany

A whole lot of drinking. Remember the time, he was a young man without a family in a country known for their drinking.

It was while he was stationed in Germany that his Mother and Grandma meet a young woman who worked in the hospital where his Mother was getting treatment for cancer. They talked her in to writing "Herbie Gene" and she did. They wrote for a while and he decided to marry her but by the time he made it back to Indiana, she had married another man. However, the story does not end there, a few years later his Grandma and the young woman meet again.

Fort Carson, Colo Spgs Colorado

Still young. Herb rarely talked about his time at Fort Carson other than to say he had spend sometime there before Viet nam.

(The only thing I recall my Dad saying about Fort Carson was it was called fort cartoon and there were little white crosses outside the gate to remind people not to drink and drive)

IT was sometime during either Fort Carson and Viet Nam that his Grandma meet the young woman again. Now the young woman had two young children and had been abandoned by her husband. Grandma once again encouraged her to write "Herbie Gene". Which the young woman did. Herb meet her and her children. He helped to pay for her divorce from her former spouse.

Viet nam
He was in Viet nam during the Tet Offensive.

His best friend, Bill DeWeese also served in the military during the same time. Upon hearing that Bill had died, Herb requested to accompany the body back to Indiana for burial. His request was granted.

While in Indiana for the burial, he and his wife to be drove across the state line into Illinois, to his cousin's home and they married. At the time in Indiana, she could not remarry for 2 years in the state, so they had to go out of state to marry. That day, he became a husband and a Daddy.

He rarely talked about his time in Vietnam but one story that is remembers is. He talked about standing on the back porch of a bunker peeing (yeap, young men and not wanting to walk to the latrine to pee) when mortars started raining down. He said that by the time he made it into the bunker, he was the last one in. Everyone else beat him into it.

While in Vietnam, he requested and was granted a hardship reassignment due to his mother's illness.

Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana

Family man and the family grew by one. His youngest daughter was born. As well, the adoption of his wife's children was completed too.

He had some hunting dogs and went hunting. As well, he was a member of a local shooting club.

Scolfield Barracks, Hawaii

While in Hawaii, the family decided it was time to get a house dog. They heard about a dog that had puppies off post. So they drove over and there were 3 puppies left, two tan ones and a black one that would not come out of the dog house. Herb's son crawled into the dog house and brought out Gidget . Mostly black and looked like a small dobberman pincher. It was love at first sight for the family. Gidget road home in Herb's front shirt pocket. Later she became his wife's dog but that night she was his.

He loved to fish, while in Hawaii he joined the Bass club and fished several fresh water places on the island.

He coached son's baseball team and his daughters slow pitch softball teams.

One story from Hawaii, his wife was taking the cub scouts on a trip to visit Koli Koli pass, where the Japanese's zeroes flew in to Oahu and where there is a large white cross. Herb took his two daughters and the family dog and started up the switchback trail that goes up the front of the mountain. With much encouragement and the carrying to either one or both girls and or even the dog they finally making it to the top, they meet the cub scouts who had walked the more leisurely service road on the back side of the pass. When the trip was done, they all walked back down the same road the scouts had walked up.

Fort Carson, Colo Spgs Colo.

When they moved to Colorado, they had a rude awaking about the gas shortage that was going on at the time. The first night the car was parked in the temporary hotel on Fort Carson, someone siphoned nearly all the gas from the station wagon. The next day, Herb went out and purchased a locking gas cap.

Herb grew up hunting and fishing. He tried fly fishing and ice fishing while he lived in Colorado.

It was also during this time, that the Army required Herb to go out on maneuvers. He was often gone several days at a time. And when he returned, he nearly always brought back some of his MRE's and shared them with the children. Often times it was peanut butter in the little cans that needed a can opener to open it and the little crackers. And of course the biggest hit were the little gums (chiclets).

While in Colorado, the Ford family grew by 4 dogs to a grand total of 5 dogs. One was a dog named Gus Most of the dogs slept in the same room as Herb and his wife. One night, Gus woke Herb up because he had to go pee. Herb told him to go back to sleep since he himself was very tired and didn't want to get up. Herb woke up enough to realize that Gus was leaving the bedroom. He stumbled out of bed and followed the dog up the stairs. Expecting the dog to be at the top of the stairs to be let out. He was not and Herb caught him with his leg hoosted and peeing on Herb's Lazyboy chair. Gus was known to be the dog that peed on anything and everything.

Though, he had many dogs over the years, the one that became his was Muffins She came to the family as a puppy during a very snowy cold snap. Her tail was frost bitten because the family that owner her mother left the mother and puppies out in the cold in a dog house. Not sure how it happened but she became his. She died while the family was visiting Indiana. Herb buried her after his return from vacation. He cried while he built her coffin and then buried her in the backyard.

Korea

He went to Korea alone for one year.

It was during his time there that he nearly died from a drug reaction. He became very ill and went to the hospital and told them he was allergic to penicillin. It was also noted in his chart but for some reason the dr. prescribed a penicillin drug and he had a very bad reaction and was hospitalized for a week.

After Korea, he returned to Fort Carson and then retired from the Army. He worked several jobs until he was hired by the Post Office. He and his wife wanted to move back to Indiana. Employees of the Post Office can ask for transfers if there are openings at other facilities. After looking for a while, he found one at the Kokomo branch. Asked for and recieved a transfer.

After he and his wife moved back to Indiana, they once again enjoyed fishing at the River.

He retired from the Post Office in 2001.

This freed up time for him to go fishing with his brother and other family members. He also would go hunting with his nephews.

Herb died while on the way into Logansport to purchase a few items. His truck was struck by a semi truck and he died instantly. He oldest grandson was also in the truck and survived the accident.
