The following information for this memorial page was taken from birth, marriage, death and census records. Also Marjorie Woods of Lombardy shared some of her family history notes with me. Jane Vanderzande the great great granddaughter of Francis Lumbar provided extensive research for this memorial page. Researcher Susan Garske Sylvester

As you follow the history of Francis Lumbar there are various spellings of his name. Jane Vanderzande found his birth record under the name of Francois Lambert. He was born in Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly, Lotbiniere, Quebec, Canada. She said that the Lamberts were a very old family in Quebec. He was also listed under the name Lambert, Lombard, lombar, and lumbar.

From the South Elmsley Book: "In 1815 Francis Lombard settled at the corner, which afterwards took the name "Lombards Corners" and was known by this name until 1879. Taken from the Brockville Recorder and Times 3-30-1978 "He purchased the original Crown grant of 200 acres given to Catherine McKue on August 20, 1801. He bought the farm for 137 English pounds. The property was Lot 19, Second Concession, South Elmsley.

After he purchased the 200 acre farm, Lumbar erected the first log house on the property. The northern section of Lombard's farm became the village. He sold the village lots one by one over a period of 40 years. His son Charles had used one lot for a hotel site."

He had a family of four children with his second wife Ann Millerk Finlayson Lumbar(Janette Fox's grandmother). She had immigrated with her first husband from Scotland and settled in Bathurst, near Perth. Ann was Presbyterian. The Lombards were among 70 members of the Roman Catholic congregation in 1832. Francis Lombard began to raise his family Presbyterian after marrying his second wife, Ann although he remained Catholic himself."

Jane Vanderzande's research:

Jane stated that Marie Elisabeth died around 1823. He then married Ann Millerk Finlayson. She found the following marriage record. " Francis Lambard married Ann Millerk
at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on May 8, 1829."

We both are unsure about the Millerk name. It could possibly be her maiden name.

On the 1851 census record The Francis Lombar (Lumbar) family was located in Elmsley, Leed, Canada West (Ontario). On a Illustrated Historical Atlas of Leeds County I found the family living on Concession 2 Lot 19 in South Elmsley. On this census Francis was 81 and farming. He was living with his second wife Ann who was 55 years old. Francis was born in Canada East and Ann was born in Scotland. Since Ann and Francis were married in 1829, the children listed on the census were from his second marriage to Ann. Living with them were the following children: Charles age 21 and farming; Charlotte age 18; Julian age 15; Francis age 15; and Alexander age 8. Francis age 15 was not their child but was Francis Lumbar's grandchild. He was the son of Peter and Julia Lumbar and living with his grandfather and step grandmother.

On the 1861 census Francis and Ann were still living in Elmsley, Leed, Ontario. They were living with his son Charles Lumbar and his wife Mary Margaret plus their children. Francis was 88 and Ann was 60. Charles was 28 and Mary Margaret was 24. They had 3 children; Julia Ann age 7; Francis age 5 and Charlotte age 4. All are Presbyterian except for Francis who was Roman Catholic.

Francis and Ann will witness the death of their son Charles Lumbar and and their two grandchildren Francis and Charlot Lumbar in 1832. a year later, Francis will die on June 9, 1863. All four are buried in the Lumbar Family Cemetery located on the land they owned.
