Gertrude was the daughter of Norman Edson Purple and Mary Catherine Clark. During her years as a youngster her family lived in New Britain Connecticut, where all of her siblings were born.

We can find the family in the 1870 Federal Census living in New Britain CT where her father was working as a house painter. The parents of Gertrude's mother (Mary Catherine Clark) were listed right after this family in the census (Lucius and Catherine) where her grand father was working at joinering (a carpenter, especially one who constructs doors, window sashes, paneling, and other permanent woodwork). Note : Norman's brother Jasper Legrand Purple was a very successful carpenter.

In 1870 Gertrude was listed as 6 years old, her older sister Alice was 7, her younger brother Edson L was 3, and her younger brother Walter E was just 2 months old - all of them are listed as "at home" with Alice and Gertrude the only children who attended school. Her parents were listed as Norman E 35, Catherine C 32.

In the 1880 Federal Census we find the family living in Pelham, Hampshire County, Massachusetts - about 20 miles north east of Amherst Mass. Her parents : Norman E Purple 45 working "in F Rod Man" (some type of manufacturing), Mary C 40 keeping home. Gertrude E was 15, Alice A was 17 (for some reason marked as married but we have no evidence of that), Edson L was 13, Walter 10, and the most recent arrival in the family Isabelle 8. Alice and Gertrude did not attend school but the rest of the children did.

According to Mass Vital Records, Deaths Reported in Amherst, Gertrude passed away 6 May 1881 due to typhoid fever at the age of 16 years 7 months and 25 days. We can assume that the family moved to the Amherst area shortly after the 1880 census was taken - or - Gertrude was taken to Amherst for treatment as Pelham was very rural at the time.

Gertrude is laid to rest in the family plot, which was purchased by her sister Alice who it appears may have stayed behind in the area when the family moved to Antelope County Nebraska (where her father died 16 Sep 1844).

Her mother moves back to the Holyoke area by 1894 where we find her living with Alice at 276 Maple St. Gertrude's sister Alice can be found working in Holyoke Mass in 1885 whereas her mother can be found in Royal Nebraska in that state's 1875 census.
