Lieut. General.

He began his military career as an enlisted man in the Alabama National Guard. He was a graduate of the Class of 1938 at the United States Military Academy and was an undefeated boxed. He fought in World War II in Africa, Sicily and the Normandy invasion. Afterwards he was an instructor in tactics at West Point and was assigned to Army Headquarters in the District of Columbia. He became staff chief at the Infantry Center at Fort Benning, Georgia and served as deputy chief of staff of United States forces in Korea. He returned to the District of Columbia and later served in Vietnam. In early 1964 he was appointed commander of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg and led the division in the Dominican Republic in 1965. He was named commander of Fort Benning's Infantry Center and Infantry School. In 1967 he returned to Fort Bragg as the commanding general 18th Airborne Corps and of the base. He retired in July 1968. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, three Silver Stars and four Bronze Stars for valor, two Purple Hearts and the French Legion D'Honneur. The Legacy of Lt. General Robert H. York, a restricted circulation booklet produced at West Point was an effort to define characteristics that contributed to leadership.
