No tombstone for Frederick. Record of his burial at Salem Chapel came from Family Bible records. Son of John G. and Paulina Salmon Smith. Husband of Nancy Crews Smith. (Frederick was shown in the 1870 census as being 58 years old, which would put his birth year at ca. 1812 or 1813.) Frederick was a blacksmith. (Had siblings Martha T. John G., Paulina S. William G., Mary D., and Minerva G. Smith McMillan.) Children of Frederick and Nancy Crews Smith were : Mary Louise Smith Eagleson, Thomas J. Smith (b. Feb. 2, 1840, killed at Fredericksburg, Va. May 4, 1862), Elmira Smith Samuel--wife of Joseph William Samuel of Oak Ridge, NC, Ann Elizabeth(Bettie)Smith Blackburn Crews, and John William Cole Smith. The 1860 census also showed a Robert who was 9 at the time, and Christiana, who was 6. The 1870 census shows the children as Maria L.--32; John W.--20; Robert D.--17, and Nancy K.--9) (Note: The father of Frederick, John G. Smith died in 1836---"apoplexed and seized" from a stroke while riding in his wagon as he was crossing a creek (Town Fork.) His body was found underneath the wagon. John G. Smith was also a blacksmith.) Record of Frederick and Nancy's burial at Salem Chapel came from Family Bible records owned by Mrs. Helen Fletcher of Bennettsville, SC (in 1978)--a descendant of Frederick J. Smith.
