As a young woman she worked for Hardware Mutuals Insurance in Dallas, and after her marriage, she continued working at home as a bookkeeeper for the insurance company.
She married Rufus Van Shamburger in Dallas in 1935 and their children are Mary Ruth and Bobby and grandchildren Jeanne, Melanie and Susan. Tommye Jean participated in PTA when her children were young and she attended parents' meetings for the new YMCA at Longview.
In later years she worked at the tax office, Gregg County.
Tommye Jean, her husband and children took long trips in the summers, travelling to the west coast, Canada and Mexico. An entire summer was spent in Dickinson, ND and several weeks in Baker City, OR during another summer. The family liked camping at Lake Texoma.
