Funeral services for Herman F. Steinhoff, 72, Smithland, who died at a Sioux City Hospital of injuries suffered in a traffic accident Wednesday of last week, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the German City United Church of Christ. The Rev. Keith Scott will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of the Willman Funeral Home of Rodney, Iowa.
The death of Mr. Steinhoff was the 14th Sioux City traffic fatality in 1964 compared with four at this time last year.
Mr. Steinhoff was hospitalized for injuries suffered in a two-truck accident at the south edge of Sioux City near the Interstate 29 Industrial Interchange.
The exact cause of Mr. Steinhoff’s death was not announced immediately by the acting medical examiner.
According to police, Steinhoff’s pickup and a semi-trailer truck were traveling south on Iowa 75 when the driver of the truck slowed to turn into a road leading to an Interstate 29 interchange and the pickup struck the rear of the truck.
The driver of the truck, George R. Richer, 54, Tampa, Fla., escaped injury, police stated.
Mr. Steinhoff was born Feb. 14, 1892, near Hornick, Iowa, and married Clara Washburn in June, 1919. She died in 1924. He then married Cora Patterson in 1928.
Survivors are the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Eva Humphrey of Anaheim, Calif., Mrs. Elda Byers of Victorville, Calif., and Mrs. Lois Kluver of Shenandoah, Iowa; one son, Jack of Hornick; a sister, Mrs. Yetta Cox of Onawa, Iowa, and 15 grandchildren.
