Mary V. Hammond, 95, of Midland, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.

She was born on March 10, 1913, in Gratiot County daughter of the late Phillip and Dora (Carmen) Chubb. Mary married George Jacobs on Feb. 2, 1928. He predeceased her. She then married George Scutt in 1935, he died in 1940. On Feb. 13, 1945, she married Charley Hammond, he died in 1979. Mary worked in the field with plow horses for her parents as a youngster. As an adult she did janitorial work for WMDN Radio Station and a variety of businesses. She joined the Amway Corporation as in independent distributor in 1963. Mary had a special love for people and felt it was important to tell them she loved them. She was known as the official hugger at the North Midland Family Center for the past several years. When she was able she enjoyed traveling. She exercised her memory every day by recalling special dates and could recite the date and perhaps even the time she met you.

Surviving is one son, George Jacobs of Midland; grandchildren John Jacobs of Midland, Susan (Ron) Ringler of Pennsylvania, Sally (Kevin) Cunningham of California and George (Sarah) Jacobs of Midland; six great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosa LaClear of Gladwin and Viola Louise Long of California. In addition to her parents and husbands she was predeceased by three brothers, William Chubb, Alvie Chubb and Samuel Earl; and by sisters, Bertha Chubb, Bernadine Wyllis and Beatrice Chubb. She was also predeceased by half brothers and half sister, Charlie Chubb, Russell Chubb and Edith Chubb; two great-grandchildren, Tom and Robert; and daughter-in-law, Mary Jacobs.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Priest Joanna Kernstock from the Community of Christ Church and longtime friend, Carol Sweebe will officiate. Burial will be in Larkin Township Cemetery.

Mary's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
