Hester was the 5th of 11 children of Alvin Newton Dortch and Tennessee Jordan Glover. Fannie & Maude Gray were also raised as siblings (Theresa Dortch's children) when she died young.

Hester married William Joseph Cliborne 26 May 1895, in Mecklenburg, VA. They had 9 children: 1) Giles Alvin, 2) Etta Estelle, 3) Mary Elizabeth 4) Hester Ann, 5) William Joseph 6) Charles Newton 7) Lucy Mildred 8) Dorothy Lee, 9) James Augusta.

Lucy Mildred died in 1911 & was buried in Mays Chapel cemetery in Mecklenburg. Hester's mother came to visit (or live with her) as a widow. Tennessee died in 1919 and was buried by Lucy. When the Kerr dam was put in, the cemetery was moved, but they are still buried at Mays Chapel, at the moved Mays Chapel cemetery.

All of Hester's children were born in Mecklenburg, VA. After the 1920 Census, they moved to Dinwiddie, VA. In Jan 1928 Hester died from the Grippe (severe flu), & Mar 1929, one year and 1 month later Hester's youngest child James died.
