Leona was the second child of Joseph Newton McDonald and Mary Anita Smith. At the time of the 1900 Census, she was living with her parents in Washington, D.C., and was shown as Leona Kibbey, married, but no husband was shown. After her father's death, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles, Ca. At age 39, Leona died of chronic nephritis at the L.A. County Hospital, at which time her name was Leona McDonald. It is curious that the hospital supplied the information for her death certificate, even though her mother and brother were in L.A. at that time. The hospital did not know the year of her birth and incorrectly reported 25 as her age.
