When his brothers left the area, Matt stayed. He lived alone in his little house and for many years was the only Tuttle in the community. While he continued to do a little farming, Matt raised sheep and ran his flock on the Tuttle lands. In 1940 tragedy struck. One afternoon, Bill Krenzke noticed something lying down by his back gate, and upon investigation, found Matt, desperately sick. He had crawled all the way from his shack- about two miles away. Ben Krenzke quickly drove him to the hospital, but Matt died, apparently a victim of food poisoning. He was 53 years old.
