Catherine Love
Long time Redlands resident
1917 - 2014
Born Catherine Agnes Zilles on October 17, 1917 in her family's farmhouse in Thayer County, Nebraska. She graduated from St. Bernard grade school in Hebron, Nebraska in 1931. Catherine had great interests and talent in drawing and entered several art pieces in the Thayer County Fair in Deshler, Nebraska, winning several "First Premium" awards in 1930 and sweeping the competition in 1931 winning two "First, Second and Third Premium" Awards. Catherine enjoyed school and the opportunity to contribute to her community. In 1934 she was honored as the "Future Citizen of the World," Graduating from Hebron High School Class of 1935. Catherine thrived in Business College in Chillicothe, MO where she also played on the college women's basketball team. Soon after graduation, she moved to Prescott, AZ where her older sister, Gertrude, had settled. Catherine began work as a bookkeeper at a local lumber yard whose owner was the conservator of a local Indian Reservation and as such, one of Catherine's duties required her to become a "Snake Charmer" and in so doing, she met a handsome cowboy named Charley Love. They married on August 31, 1941, moved to Redlands and eventually had six children.
Catherine spent many years at home with the children, then worked at Sonora School in Costa Mesa. She went back to college when her youngest daughter was in pre-school, obtaining a second degree, this one from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA as a computer programer. The Loves moved back to their Redlands house on Norwood Street in 1974, when Charley retired. Catherine then worked at the Social Security office in San Bernardino.
Central to her core belief's, she cherished and truly loved her faith. Catherine attended mass several times a week for the majority of her life. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, now known as Holy Name of Jesus on Olive Ave. in Redlands. Catherine had always been supportive of her community, and for years, volunteered her business skills to help local senior citizens and the low income with their taxes and finances.
Catherine Love passed, on Sunday evening, February 23, 2014 in her home, surrounded by four of her daughters and her devoted son-in-law. Her first born and only son, Clifford E. Love, preceded her in death. Catherine is survived by her five daughters, Ann Denison, Tracy Russell, Doris McClure, Sharon Handgis and Pattie Love. She is further survived by 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-
grandchildren. Catherine lived a life full of love. She was the matriarch of her family and will be missed dearly.
She said "when I get my legs back in heaven, I'll be doing the Charleston" …
