Mrs. Annie Gordon Finger, active in communal affairs and one of the founds of the Jewish Home for the Aged, died Friday, October 23. She was 84.
.
Arriving at Galveston at the age of 12, she lived with a sister, Bessie Rosenberg, in West Columbia. She moved to Houston two years later when her parents arrived from Russia. She met the late Sam Finger, also an immigrant from Latvia, and they were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1903. Their 55 year marriage ended with his death in 1958.

She was a member of Congregation Adath Emeth and Congregation Beth Yeshurun. One of the founders of the Houston Chapter of the City of Hope, she was honored by the Houston Chapter on the occasion of her 80th birthday with a well-attended dinner at the Shamrock.

Most Houstonians remember the Sam Fingers for their compassion for people and their aid for those in distress. She served as janitor, cook and many times as nurse and advisor to the residents of the Jewish Home for the Aged. The two of them made this institution a full-time effort in enlisting aid, funds and supplies for the young institution which they were instrumental in founding.

Mrs. Finger known as "Aunt Annie", mothered many of those older than she and advised many who were much younger. She sane in the choir. She aided in the work of the synagogue. She was an active member of Hadassah and the Mizrachi Women. There were few communal ventures in which she did not share.

From Shepherd, Texas to Houston was a long step, but the Sam Fingers succeeded in their first mercantile store in the small community and later built a large business institution here.

She was a mother of four sons, Hyman and Sam P. Finger of Houston, Aaron of Ft. Worth, and Bernice of Shepherd; two daughters, Mrs. J. M. Glick and Mrs. Joseph P. Kost, both of Houston. She is survived by her children, 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sunday at the United Orthodox Synagogue. Rabbis Raphael Schwartzman and William S. Malev, Cantors George Wagner and Irving Dean officiated.

Burial was at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery.
