Mervin was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army's 409th Infantry as an artilleryman; he landed at Marseilles and saw combat in France, Germany, and Austria as part of the liberation of Europe leading up to VE Day. Following his service, he studied at Ohio State University; he later earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sinclair Community College in Dayton and became a licensed Professional Engineer.
While both were working on nuclear projects in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the early 1950s, he met Kathleen Wizeman; they were married on July 4, 1953, at St. Anne's Church in her hometown of Palmyra, New York. They settled in Cincinnati, working for General Electric, then Dayton before eventually moving to the Brookville area, where they raised five children. Mervin worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance and then Price Brothers Construction, but his main career was with DAP in Fairborn, where he served as a quality control manager for eighteen years.
Several years after retiring, Mervin and Kay moved to Troy, where they were members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Troy.
