Former President of Miners' Union Passes

James Sloan was 63

A past national president of the former Mine Worker's Union of Canada , James Sloan,63, died suddenly Sunday at his home


Mr Sloan came to South Alberta in 1918 and became national president of the union organization during the late 1920's after working in the mine at Coalhurst and in Lethbridge No.6 mine.


He traveled extensively throughout Canada and became widely known in mining circles during the approximately 18 years he was union president.


Born at Ayrshire, Scotland, he moved to Arcola, Sask., in 1907 where he farmed until 1916 when he moved to Coalhurst to work as a miner.


Two years later he came to Lethbridge and worked as a check weigh man until his union election.


MOVED TO B.C.


During the 1930's, he moved to Princeton, B.C, where he went into semi-retirement until eight years ago when he began working in the coal mines at Michel, B C. He returned to Lethbridge six years ago and had been in retirement because of a heart ailment until his death.


A member of the Presbyterian faith, he is survived by his widow, Mrs Ruth Sloan, one son, James of Edmonton, three daughters, Mrs Archie (Dora) Garrett and Mrs John A (Thelma) Bolen, both of Lethbridge, and Mrs William (Leona) McPherson of Spalding, Sask ; also nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Martin Brothers' Chapel Tuesday at 2 pm with Rev, Malcolm Mark officiating Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery

Last Respects to James Sloan, 63 Many friends and relatives gathered at Martin Bros. Chapel Tuesday afternoon to pay final tribute to James Sloan, 63, of 404 13th St. C. N., who died In the city Sunday. Services were conducted by Rev. Malcolm A. Mark.


Pallbearers were C. Fletcher, F. Snodden, A. Olson. W. Knox, W. Sinclair and Fred Ponech. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery, with Martin Bros, in charge of funeral arrangements.
