Susan moved to Norfolk, Nebraska, for her freshman year of high school and graduated with the class of 1952. She received a bachelors of art degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Susan married Dr. James S. "Jim" Carson on June 24, 1956. Susan and Dr. James Carson lived in McCook, Nebraska and were married 36 years at the time of his death. She married Al Shipley July 11, 1999, and they were married nine years at time of his death.

Susan was preceded in death by parents; husbands, Dr. James S. "Jim" Carson and Al Shipley.

Memorial services were Thursday, February 27, 2014, 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Methodist Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Inurnment was in O'Neill, Nebraska.
