Attorney, Activist, Politician. Born Edwin Finley Taliaferro, son of Lucien and Priscilla Taliaferro, he changed his name to Chokwe Lumumba in 1969, the year he graduated from Kalamazoo College. Even as a child he was an activist, helping his mother with causes like raising money for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was a leader of student protests in college, and in early adulthood he was elected Second Vice President of the Republic of New Afrika, a position that took him to Mississippi briefly in 1971 for the establishment of the capital of the RNA. He was later named its Minister of Justice. Lumumba earned a law degree at Wayne State University in 1975, finishing first in his class, and practiced law in Detroit before moving to Jackson, Mississippi, in 1988. In 2009 he was elected to the City Council in Jackson, and in 2013 he was elected Mayor. During his short time as Mayor he won the respect of almost everybody in the city, including those who had campaigned against him. The whole city grieved when he died less than a year after taking office.
