Mary M. Clarey, 87, of Christian Buehler Home in Peoria died at 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at the home. Born Aug. 30, 1926, in Carthage, Ill., to Timothy and Nellie Clampitt Laffey, she married William A. Clarey on Sept. 18, 1948, in Carthage, Ill. He died May 18, 2009, in Peoria.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Susan (Michael) Moore of Peoria and Sharon Clarey (Eric Riegelman) of Dallas, Texas; three sons, Stephen (Glenda) Clarey of Redding, Calif., William (Peggy) Clarey of Austin, Texas, and Timothy (Julia) Clarey of Little Elm, Texas; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen (Tom) Dixon of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and her sister-in-law, Blanche Laffey of Eldon, Mo.
Mary graduated from the OSF School of Nursing, and worked for OSF Hospital and Proctor Community Hospital and did private duty nursing as well.
She was active in and was a rectora in Cursillo, was active in St. Vincent de Paul Church Guild and Bradley Wives Club, was past president of Diocese of Peoria National Marriage Encounter and was past president of Couple's Caper Ballroom Dance Club. Mary also played golf in the Peoria Women's Nine golf league since 1982, and Senior Nine Hole golf league, serving as past president for both, and was a member of Arrowhead and Willow Knolls country clubs. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at 1 p.m. at St. Philomena Catholic Church, with Fr. David Richardson officiating. Further visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass.
Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research Association-Central Illinois Chapter.
