A single-vehicle crash killed a Sacramento man early Tuesday morning after his SUV overturned on Interstate 80 in Vacaville and slammed into a guard rail, officials reported.
The driver, identified by the Solano County Coroner's Office as 46-year-old Bryant Adams, was traveling eastbound around 5:40 a.m. in his 2001 Ford Explorer when the accident took place, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.
As Adams approached Lagoon Valley Road, for unknown reasons, his SUV drifted off the right-hand shoulder of the freeway and onto the "unimproved gravel," said Sgt. Jason Hekker. Adams turned the steering wheel sharply to the left, over-correcting, which caused the vehicle to overturn and flip across all four east-bound lanes before crashing into the guard rail at the center divide.
The impact caused the SUV to flip up and over the guard rail before coming to a rest on its driver's side between the east and west-bound lanes.
Despite wearing a seat belt, Adams was partially ejected through the window, causing him to suffer fatal injuries, Hekker said.
Fire crews working to extricate Adams said he was dead when they arrived at the scene.
Caltrans crews assisted authorities with the lane closure and a SIG alert was issued immediately following the crash, which closed the fast lane of eastbound I-80 for approximately three hours while emergency crews and investigators worked to clear the scene, officials said. The westbound lanes were not affected by the crash, however, traffic slowed while passing the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Hekker said, noting that it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
The Coroner's Office conducted Adams' autopsy later Tuesday. His cause of death was determined to be multiple injuries due to the crash.
