The 1950's were spent in San Antonio, being a mom and house maker; Cub Scout Den Mother, Member of Basse Road and Beacon Hill Church of Christ, Enjoyed Square Dancing, Vacations to Arizona, El Paso, and several back to Chamal Mexico, She sewed when needed but it was not a hobby, She raised parakeets and sold Avon for extra money
In 1960's she and family moved to Houston. The early 60's was hard for her, her niece who was 18 years old and terminal lived with the family for two months before dying. But joy came too, as nephew, and wife, lived with them for several weeks then had a baby. There were many other joys for her; Garden Oaks Church of Christ – she was an elder's wife and enjoyed teaching 2nd Grade Sunday School. She had several part time jobs in Houston, sales clerk at J.C. Penny's, and file clerk at a hospital.
The 1970 were a time of joy and change: Son, Nelson got married and lived in Abilene, granddaughter was born and they moved to Pine Bluff Arkansas, it was a promotion and a new adventure but a different city, different house, and new friends.
In the 1980, they moving back to Houston, and returned to family, friends, enjoyed working with the Garden Oaks Church. They enjoyed David's retirement, as they bought and refurbished an old motor home and made several trips with family, Grandson, was born. She and David keep busy and had fun looking for antiques at garage sales and refinishing them. She lost her sister in 1984, cared for her mother who lived with them until she died in 1987, and cared for husband during his illnesses until he died in 1988.
In the 1990's, she enjoyed buying a small house in Houston and fixing it up; plants and yard work was her hobbies now. She even mowed her own grass. She helped and gave encouragements to her brother and son as they started a new business. But she was shocked when her brother died of heart attack 1996 returning home after just visiting her. Youngest son, Nelson became ill and Nellie sold many of her antiques, rent her house and then moved into Nelson's house and to care for him for two years before he passed in 1999.
She decided to sell her house in Houston, after son and family moved to Cameron in 2000. She bought a house in Cameron, enjoyed her outside hobby of working in the yard. Her inside hobbies were scrapbooks and photo albums. Most of her family and friends were gone but enjoyed their memories in the scrapbooks and albums. Her eyesight was failing and she her lost her driver's in 2009. As her son, and wife moved to Round Rock, she moved into their home. Her health was good for several years and she enjoyed working with plants and flowers. But as her back condition got worse she found a new hobby, reading books, western were her favorite.
She gave photos and wrote several articles about her family's life in Mexico that are posted on the Blalock Colony's website. One of her last highlights was attending the 2011 Blalock Colony Reunion; see old family and friends that grew up with in Mexico, plus their many descendants. In her last few months she enjoyed talking to great grandson in Spanish because he was taking Spanish in school.
