While a resident of Boonton Jay was very active in the towns Scouting movement serving as Cub Master of Pack 103 and Scoutmaster of Troop 1 BSA Boonton from 1973 to 1982 and as Committee Chairman for many years afterwards. He was also very active serving the local BSA Council as a trainer and assistant on many committees. He earned his Scouters Key, Wood Badge beads and Silver Beaver Awards for service to local scouting. He took great pride in being able to help many young men attain the rank of Eagle Scout and continued to mentor and support the Troop.
