Jacob was injured in Giles County, Virginia on 15 June 1862 when a horse fell on him during the Regiment's march to Lewisburg, Virginia on the narrows of New River. The fall cut and crushed his left leg below the knee and dislocated his left hip. He was confined to a military hospital in Greenbrier County, VA and medically discharged for disability on 1 July 1863.
