Claude R. Beckwith Sr., 59, of Coulter Street, Bennington, VT, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at his home. Death followed a long illness.
Born at the family home in North Adams on March 8, 1941, he was the son of Clarence A. and Mabel E. (Rowley) Beckwith. He grew up in Adams and attended Adams schools.
Upon enlistment in the Marine Corps, he obtained his USAFI. He served with the Marine Corps from 1958 until 1962.
On July 10, 1959, he married the former Judith A. Brooks in Conway, S.C.
He was a driver for Quinn Freight Lines and later became a salesman for Fairbanks Express and for Sweeney Transportation Co. He retired in November 2000. He is a past president of the Berkshire County Transportation Association, past president of the Capital District Transportation Association, past president of the Northeast Motor Corp. Association, past president Berkshire County Shrine Club, past president of Zefder Shrine Club of Bennington, past president of the Bennington Club, former member of the Cairo Temple, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 996 of North Adams, member of the American Legion Post 13 of Bennington, and a life member of the Melha Temple, Springfield. He played Santa Claus for many years at the children's Christmas parties.
In recent years, he devoted his life to God and to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He was instrumental in the music program at the church and was a member of the governing board at the church. He was the first constable in the town of Bennington.
Besides his wife, he leaves his stepmother, three sons, a daughter, two brothers, six grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A son, Brian Beckwith, died in 1995.
