Elizabeth Phillips was the first daughter of Francis Phillips, who was a Maties Auditor of the Exchequer, and Olive Sawyer, a daughter of George Sawyer and sister of Sir Edmund Sawyer. Her paternal grandparents were William Phillips of London and Joan Houghton, the daughter of Thomas Houghton. The Phillips pedigree is mentioned in the Herald's Visitation of London made in 1568. Elizabeth survived her husband by 35 years dying in 1683, and her will, which is included in article entitled "Lightfoot Family" in files of M. Shaver, bequeathed a substantial sum to her children and grandchildren, including John 3rd and Phillip Lightfoot, who were residing in the colony of Virginia. She also left a substantial sum to the poor of St. Sepulchures Parish in London.
