The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Hoff) Bierbower and stepson of Dinah (Miller) Bierbower, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Conoy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. His death certificate claims he was born in Lancaster County, but his military records say York County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Maytown, Lancaster County, September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 21 as a private with Co. B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in the right forearm either at the battle of South Mountain September 14, 1862, or three days later at Antietam 3 days later. (His compiled military service records claims both in different documents. South Mountain is more likely). The wound fractured both the radius and ulna. Furloughed home, he later was admitted to the hospital at Frederick, Maryland, and transferred to the convalescent camp in Alexandria, Virginia, where he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate April 10, 1863, but they apparently had no children.

He married Johanna Bredina R. Hoke, née ?, widow of Lewis A. Hoke, veteran of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
