Jabez Gross (Hincks5, Thomas4, Simon3, Clement2, Isaac1)

He was the son of Hincks Gross and wife, Abigail Crowell of Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Jabez was married in Wellfleet on October 24, 1763 to Dorothy Ellis of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Jabez was the first of that name in the Gross family since it was taken from the maternal parent after her brother, Jabez Crowell.

Alice Gross born April 8, 1767 prob. Wellfleet and was the one at Greenwich who married Daniel Hill (Revolutionary War soldier)Of Greenwich on July 28, 1785. She died April 24, 1843 in Peterboro, Madison County, New York. See link below.

Joanna Gross born about 1769, prob. at Greenwich, and married Anthony Cooley of Greenwich on Jan.6, 1788.

According to the Gross Family Genealogy at NEGHS, they say:
"The record of Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War, shows Jabez Gross as a minuteman, in response to alarm of April 19, 1775, from Greenwich, Hampshire County, Mass: enlisting as a private from Greenwich in April 1775 for three months and two weeks.Also, private of Greenwich , Capt. John Packard's Co., Col. David Brewer's Regiment; nine months term at Fishkill, New York from July, 1778.....age 36, complexion , dark, stature 5'9. Fishkill was depository of military stores, encampment of a portion of the Continental Army and for the confinement of Tory prisoners."

The Original Immigrant, Isaac Gross,a Puitan, was born in England on November 19, 1585 to William and Mary Gross. He came over in 1630 with the Winthrop Expedition on the ship, ARABELLA and helped to found and settle Boston. Governor John Winthrop brought the charter with him for the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was thought to be a close associate of Isaac Gross. Isaac died about 1649 and left a large estate. His widow, Ann or Anne Lobley Gross, supposedly remarried in 1658 to Samuel Sheare of Dedham.

Gravesite Details

An official reading of this cemetery taken before 1920 states : " Here is the broken tombstone of Jabez Gross who died 26 March 1819 ae 76 ." A reading in 1920 states that both the tombstone of Jabez Gross and his wife Dorothy were illegible.
