Funeral services for D.W. Stewart, Sr., 78, prominent Minden attorney and lifelong resident of Webster Parish, were held from his home at 1:00 p.m. April 27, Rev. N.M. Seren? and Rev. W.F O'Kelley officiating.
Mr. Stewart succumbed to pneumonia at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, following a three day illness.
Mr. Stewart was born on a farm seven and a half miles north of Minden on the Lewisville road. The date of his birth is February 13, 1857.
He attended school at Pine Grove, later going to Homer Male Academy. In February of 1878 he entered the University of Mississippi, and graduated in June of 1882.
After graduation he came home and obtained the position as teacher of the Ratcliff school. He lived at the home of N.J. Sandlin, whose two sons, Mack and John, were pupils. Mr. Stewart practiced law during nearly all of his mature years.
He was admitted to the bar in October of 1884. He and Judge L.K. Watkins stood the bar examination in Shreveport on the same day.
During his long life as an attorney, he participated in many cases making law history. His ability before the bench was respected throughout the entire south.
On August 5, 1894 he married Miss Alice Reagan, daughter of James Wood Reagan, former sheriff of Webster Parish, five children, four of whom survive, resulting from the union. He had been a member of the First Methodist church here for 55 years.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Miss Mary Stewart of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. H.T. Spiva of Minden; two sons, Dan W. Stewart, Jr., Minden attorney and member of the law firm of Stewart and Stewart, and Reagan Stewart.
Members of of the Webster Parish Bar Association acted as active pallbearers during the funeral rites.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Luther Longino, Dr. W.G. Banks, M.H. Sandlin, A.H. Phillips, Dr. S.M. Richardson, E.S. Richardson, R.H. Miller, A.H. Gray, Grady Gray, J.R. Miller, Sam G. Webb, J.E.
