Delivered Mail in Same District Twelve Years – Retired Three Years Ago
A. R. Haggerty, who at the time of his retirement from active service three years and a half ago was the city's oldest letter carrier in point of service, died at 3:10 p. m. Tuesday at his home, 217 Second avenue NW. He was 64 years old.
Mr. Haggerty became a substitute letter carrier here 18 years ago. For three years he was employed as a substitute and then was given a regular route, carrying mail in the residential district to the same patrons for 12 years. Three years ago he was forced to retire because of ill health and since then had been gradually failing.
He was born in Farmington township, June 15, 1864, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Haggerty. On June 8, 1892 he married Anna Louise Funk and to them six children were born. They are George R., Lake City; Clarence H., killed in action during the World war; Dr. Robert W., New Richmond, Wis.; Allen A., Lansford, N., and Dorothy Haggerty of Rochester.
Surviving also are four brothers and one sister, Benjamin, living in California; John, Rochester, and Bert, Arthur and Miss Jennie Haggerty, all living in Farmington township. There are six grandchildren.
While operating a farm in Farmington, Mr. Haggerty served for some time as town clerk. In 1898 he moved to Rochester and served two terms of four years each as treasurer of Olmsted county, beginning with his election in 1899. He entered the postal service in 1910 and retired March 1, 1925.
He was a member of the Workmen and Woodmen lodges.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a. m. Thursday at St. John's church and interment will be in St. John's cemetery.
