War Criminal - Waldemar Hoven was born in Germany but between the years 1919 and 1933, he visited and/or lived in Denmark, Sweden, the United States, and France. He returned to the town of his birth, Freiburg, Germany in 1933 where he belatedly completed his high school studies. He then attended the University in Freiburg and then in Munich. He completed his medical studies in 1939 and became a physician in the SS (he had joined the SS in 1934). Hoven was well thought of in the SS and soon rose to the rank of Hauptsturmführer (Captain). He was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp where he took over the position as chief doctor and was involved in the administration of medical experiments regarding typhus and the tolerance of serum containing phenol. The administration of phenol led to the deaths of many inmates. He was also involved in Nazi euthanasia programs, during which Jewish people and others deemed unfit for work were murdered. The SS arrested him for the murder by lethal injection of phenol of a fellow SS officer in 1943. Reportedly, the officer was a witness in an investigation against Ilse Koch, with whom Hoven was rumored to be having an affair. Koch was the wife of the Buchenwald camp commandant, Karl Otto Koch. The SS High Court convicted Hoven and sentenced to him to death. However, he was released from prison in March 1945 due to the Nazi shortage of doctors. Hoven was arrested at the end of World War II by the Allies and put on trial for war crimes at the "Doctors Trial" conducted in Nuremberg. He was found guilty of "Crimes Against Humanity" and "Membership in a Criminal Organization" (the SS). He was sentenced to death and on June 2, 1948, he was hanged at Landsberg Prison in Bavaria. Hoven was buried there in the prison cemetery. **NOTE ** - On 4/7/2018, this author received a message that Hoven's remains were removed from the prison cemetery and re-interred at a cemetery in Freiburg. This information was gleaned from Thomas Raithel's book, "Die Strafanstalt Landsberg am Lech" on page 146.
