Eva "Rae" Metcalf Geaslin Howard

Early Life: Rae's "time to be born" was December 7, 1934, in Haskell, Oklahoma, to Anna Seals and Clifford Metcalf. Her mother told her that she was an exceptionally welcomed and pleasant child. Rae always teased that she was her mama's favorite. "A time to plant." Rae was planted in a harsh climate, but the attitudes and habits she developed and the experiences she had in the many places she lived growing up, made her sturdy. After graduating from high school in Texas, she thrived in the soil and climate of Utah, and was blessed to flower and bear fruit through the changing seasons of her life there.

Life's Work | Service | Interests: Part of Rae's "time to get" included her years of learning at Brigham Young University and Emporia Kansas State University in Kansas. It was while at BYU that her search for truth brought her to a "time to break down" the many traditions and beliefs that were burdens for her and she became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was taught the principles of the restored gospel by a professor who loved her with the pure love of Christ. She had never felt that kind of love before. Above all else in Rae's life, she desired to learn to love like that, so she could serve and bless her family and others as she had been served and blessed. She rejoiced in the callings she had as a covenant disciple of Jesus Christ, especially the opportunities to teach her family, the youth and her sisters in the Church; also, as a ward, stake and service missionary. She was also a temple worker in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple. "A time to love." Rae was sealed to her love, Kenneth M. Howard, in the Salt Lake Temple on March 16, 1956. He has truly been the wind beneath her wings. Her continuing education in how to become an eternal wife and mother was the best and the most rigorous adventure of her life. Her four children/teachers are the stars in her crown. Michael Howard, her indigo child of the universe; Scott Howard (Kimberli), her child of light and truth; Dallas Harris (Richard), her child of enduring grace and joy; and Rachel Humphrey (Todd), her ancient child of wisdom. The world has been Rae's neighborhood, with her love felt near and far. That love fueled a great desire to help relieve pain and suffering and brought her to a "time to heal" and a "time to speak" mostly manifested in the context of her family's business. Her family, including her mother, Dr. Anna Geaslin, opened the first of the chain of Good Earth Natural Food Markets in 1973 in Provo, Utah. Over time, she, her husband Ken, and her children, became part of the growing movement in our country which emphasized maintaining wellness and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Rae spent twenty-five years writing legislation; training and organizing coalition and grassroots lobbying efforts nationally; testifying before state legislatures, Presidential Commissions, the FDA, FTC and the National Institutes of Health on issues relating to health and health care. Among them: regulatory and administrative rules, Good Manufacturing Practices for dietary supplements, professional licensing codes, and amendments to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Rae served as President of the Rocky Mountain Nutritional Foods Association and then as President of the National Nutritional Foods Association. She was instrumental in the development of the landmark legislation, The Dietary, Supplement, Health and Education Act (DSHEA). "A time to build up." Rae loved this precious land which the Lord calls "holy," and considered her citizenship in the United States of America a sacred privilege and stewardship. She was consistently involved in her community and in the political process wherever she lived. Beginning with her first grandson, when he was five years old, she took grandchildren door-to-door with campaign literature every election cycle, after discussing with them the positions and qualifications of each candidate. It was a joy for her to take older ones to the state capitol to teach them how to lobby and present their views to legislators, to special political events and activities, and to Washington D.C. on lobbying trips. Like most mothers, Rae's best years were spent in "a time to laugh and a time to dance" at hundreds of ball games, track meets, music lessons and recitals, school programs and rehearsals, races, competitions, PTA meetings, helping with homework, school and community projects, sharing missions and being involved with the ideas and interests that her children and grandchildren loved. Rae said that now, for those who love her, it's a "time to mourn;" but only a little! "A time to embrace" those who have gone ahead. And she certainly has! With great anticipation, she looks forward to the best-ever, Howard family reunion in the very near future. It will be a "time of peace," and will take place early on a beautiful, glory-filled morning. She invites all to join us! Survived By: Her husband, Kenneth; three of her children and their companions, twenty-one grandchildren who call her Mama Rae, four whom she helped deliver and three whom she helped home school; two great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Greta Metcalf; her sister-in-love, Rosemary Minervini; and many beloved and dear friends.
Preceded In Death By: Her mother and father; stepfather, Dr. Tom Geaslin; her firstborn son, Michael; her tiny granddaughter, Makenna Humphrey, who came and left as softly as a song upon the wind; her little grandson and prince, Keaton Howard; son-in-law, Art Berg; and brothers Clifford W.
