AVOCA - Douglas Eugene Parkhurst was born March 26, 1951 at Harlan. He was the son of Kent and Marilyn Laver Parkhurst. At age 6 he and his three brothers and one sister entered the Elk Horn Children's Home where they lived for four years. At this time Doug, his sister and one brother were united with his father Kent and stepmother Fern (Kroger) Parkhurst. At age 16 he left home and moved in with his older brother Gary. He worked at several places including the Phillip's 66 Station operated by Harry Nollen and Kenny Kimmen and the Oakland Beef Plant. At age 20 he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Dan Diego for 3 1/2 months. He returned home and again was employed in the Phillip's 66 Gas Station.

He married Donna Popp Jan. 13, 1977. He worked for McClarion Construction, Ron's Erection and Sales and the Abild Construction Co. He started working for the Avoca Street Department Oct. 1, 1979. They were the parents of two sons, Gene and Carl. He discovered that he had cancer April 16, 1993. He continued to work as long as his health permitted. He died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan Aug. 26, 1993 at age 42 years and 5 months.

He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, Roy and Addie (McGee) Laver and William and Etta (Holloway) Parkhurst; on uncle, Donald Dean Laver, grandparents-in-law Carl and Helen (King) Swolley. Survivors are his wife Donna; their two sons, Gene, 16, and Carl, 9, parents Kent and Fern Parkhurst of HArlan; 3 brothers, Charles (Bev) of Harlan; Gary of Omaha, NE; Donald (Robin) of Alta; 1 sister, Mrs. Richard (Marietta) Gaul of Earling; in-laws, Darold and Janet Popp of Avoca; brother -in-law, Mike Popp of Avoca; grandmother-in-law, Eldren Popp of Avoca; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Aug. 28, 1993 at the Knutson Funeral Chapel in Avoca with Pastor Bob Seibert, officiating. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery in Avoca.
