Harlan Tribune, March 20, 1921-March 23, 2003
HARLAN-Alvin Kent Parkhurst, son of William and Etta Holloway Parkhurst, was born March 20, 1921, in North Harrison, MO, and was one of four children born into this union. Kent attended school in Missouri and graduated from Eagleville High School in Missouri. After high school, he moved to Harlan, and worked for his mother's cousin, Scott Holloway, on the family farm. Kent entered the United States Army in November of 1942 and served during World War II.
After his discharge in 1943, he married Marilyn Laver. They were the parents of five children, Charles, Gary, Doug, Donald and Marietta.
In 1958, after Marilyn's death, he married Fern Kroger in Omaha, NE. Kent went to work for the Harlan Rendering Plant and then for Squealer Feed for 42 years. During this time he also helped on Ray Walters turkey farm part time. He died March 23, 2003, at Little Flower Nursing Home at age 82 years and three days.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Doug. He is survived by his wife, Fern, of Earling, his children, Charles Parkhurst of Harlan; Gary Parkhurst of Omaha, NE; Donald Parkhurst (Robin) of Alta; and Marietta (Rick) Gaul of Earling; three sisters, Lorraine Booth and Lois Phillips, both of Eagleville, MO and Ineva Bowen of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held March 26, 2003, at Pauley Jones funeral Home with Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Casket bearers were Todd Parkhurst, Tyler Parkhurst, Dylan Parkhurst, Lanny Petsche, Patrick Gaul and Craig Kroger. burial was at the Harlan Cemetery.
