AUBURN - Allen S. Sloan, recent resident of Clover Health Care, died Feb. 7, 2014, at the age of 84. He was born June 9, 1929, in Limestone, the son of Hilkiah and Emma (Thompson) Sloan.

Allen was a graduate of Limestone High School and went on after graduation to marry his beloved wife of 54 years, Inez Gamblin, Sept. 29, 1947, and take over his father's potato farm in Limestone, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. He was active in his community, serving on the town Board of Selectmen as well as the Limestone School Board, the Limestone Jaycees and Maine Potato Growers Association. His early retirement was spent keeping busy with volunteer work, managing his farm, and taking care of his beloved wife Inez during her illness until her death in 2001. He sold the farmhouse upon marrying Joyce Pelkey in 2003, and moved to Winslow, although his heart remained in his Aroostook County roots. As a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, he was active on many levels serving on the board of directors and various committees, including fund raising events, going so far as to avail himself as a hot dog vendor during the Phish Concerts. For many years he was actively involved with the Limestone Masonic Lodge No. 214, serving as District Deputy Grand Master from 19901992. Avid square dancers and members of the Limestone Honey Bears, he and Inez traveled around New England and New Brunswick with their fellow square dancing friends Thelma and Walter Ireland. Allen believed that it was important to serve his community, and did so by delivering meals to homebound elderly through Meals on Wheels, and working as a volunteer at Inland Hospital in Waterville.

Allen was predeceased by his wife, Inez; oldest son, Dan; twin brother, Albert Sloan; sisters, Pat Boltseridge, Geneva "Sally" Mead, and Beverly Bryant.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Sloan of North Monmouth; son, David Sloan and wife, Marcia, of Mapleton; one brother, Phillip Sloan and his wife, Janet, of Andover, Mass.; sisters, Mae Daniels of Portland, and Pauline Spivey and her husband, Troy, of Wichita Falls, Texas; grandchildren, Angela Sloan Ebersole, Jason Sloan, Terri Goehring, Jennifer Sloan and Kristy Nichols; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is exwife, Joyce Pelkey of Kennebunk.

Interment of ashes will be later in the spring at a private ceremony at Webster Cemetery on Ward Road. (Bangor Daily News 2/11/2014)
