Joseph (Joe) Anthony Butenschoen, Checotah resident passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 98. He was born on Thursday, January 7, 1923 to Walter and Helen (Jacklitch) Butenschoen in Eufaula, OK. Joe is survived by his sister, Rosemary Karleskint and his four children; James, Mike, Jodi, Linda and step-sons Randy and Buster Clark. Joe married Marie Matthews in 1947 until her death in 1983. He married Millie Clark in 1985 until her death in 2014. Joe was raised on a farm in Eufaula, Oklahoma that had no running water or electricity. He had a brother, George and three sisters Helen, Elsie and Rosemary. He served in the Air Force in World War II as a bombardier and flew 35 missions in a B17 over Nazi Germany. He was later called up for the Korean War and was stationed in Roswell, New Mexico where he served as a navigator on B29s. After his service he earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy (soil management and crop production) at Oklahoma State University. His passions were farming and flying and traveling throughout America. He and his second wife, Millie were always traveling either by car or airplane to see the country he loved. He always loved people and people loved to be around him. He had a unique ability to disagree with someone without being disagreeable. As a result, Joe was always welcomed by everyone.
