U.S. Congressman. After attending Princeton College, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826, and commenced to practice law in Reading, Pennsylvania. He rose to the rank of Major General of the Pennsylvania State Militia and was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State constitutional conventions, (1837 to 1838). In 1838, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry A.P. Muhlenberg and reelected to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. After leaving Congress, he was appointed by President Tyler U.S. Marshal for the eastern district of Pennsylvania, serving (1843 to 1850). He also served as Mayor of Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1852.
