Wreck victims buried
Granbury Students
Granbury (UPI) - The "shaken" students of Granbury High School Friday attended funeral services for four of the six students who died in a lunch hour car crash earlier in the week. Principal Willie Crossland dismissed classes Friday so the students could attend the services. "I think what they want most of all is for things to remain as familiar and routine as possible. Most of these kids have never faced any find of death before. It's a hard struggle at any age," he said.
A head-on crash Wednesday killed the six students and a man from nearby Stephenville. There was only one survivor from the two cars. At noon Wednesday, Craig Hillman, 17, loaded six other students into his car to drive to a nearby town for lunch. The others were Jimmy Perkins, 16; Frank Johnson, 16, Robin Bray, 15; Glenna Crow, 15; Jewell Robertson, 16; and Betty Cotton, 16. That car and another driven by Jimmy Craig Schaefer, 24, of Stephenville collided head-on four miles south of Granbury on U.S. 377. The only survivor of the crash was Perkins, listed in satisfactory condition at a Fort Worth hospital.
Spokesman for the Martin Funeral Home said the services were very short. "Most of the high school attended," she said. "The chapel has been filled with students from the time the bodies were brought in. The students have been very shaken by this. The students who died were very popular. I have a 13-year-old at home and they are all in a state of shock."
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in Granbury for Miss Robertson, with burial in Edgewood Cemetery in Granbury, and in Bonham for Miss Crow, with burial at Bonham's Gober Cemetery.
Services were held at 1 p.m. in Granbury for Miss Bray with Bray with burial at Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury. The last service Friday was at 4 p.m. in Granbury for Miss Cotton with burial in the Granbury Cemetery.
Joint services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. for Johnson and Hillman. Johnson will be buried at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas at 2:30 p.m. and Hillman will be buried immediately after the service at Holly Hills.
