Hyman (later Anglicized to Herman) Brummer was born in Grackow, Austria (now Krakow, Poland) in 1872 in what was at that time the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His parents were Jacob and Edith Brummer. We do not know how many siblings Hyman had, although from a family photo it does appear that he came from a large family. We do know that he had a brother Morris Brummer, and a sister Lena (Brummer) Winkler, who was living in St. Louis in 1898, and who later moved to New York, where she is buried.

Hyman's death certificate reports that he was in the United States since 1895, when he would have been 23, and that he was in New York two years after that. In fact, he arrived in Philadelphia on 1 July 1898 on board The Nederland, from Antwerp, Belgium, with his brother, Morris.

Hyman married Jennie Swarz (her maiden name is also spelled Schwarz and Schwartz), who was a year older than he, sometime around 1890, when they started having children. Both of them and their children had emigrated to America by 1900.

A tailor by trade, Hyman died on 1 November 1922 of tuberculosis in the Seaview Hospital, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York. His grave reads, in Hebrew, "Chaim, son of Yakov." His gravestone has his last name misspelled as "Brunner."

His wife Jennie Swarz Brummer is buried right next to him.

They were the parents of the following children who reached adulthood:

Edith Brummer Sapirman (1893-1956)
David "Dave" Brummer (1904-1975)
Ann Brummer Selkowitz (1894-1953)
Isidor "Bill" Brummer (1890-1974)
Jacob "Jack" Brummer (1902-1980)
Millie Brummer Samuels (1905-1985)
Max Brumer (1909-1963)
Gussie "Gertrude" Brummer Hertzberg (1913-1985)

Their fate of their son Isaac Brummer (1906-?) remains unknown as of this writing (2008).

Hyman and Jennie Brummer are my great-great grandparents. May they both rest in peace.
